Kemal Amin 'Casey' Kasem was born in Detroit in 1932 to Lebanese Druse immigrant parents. He grew up to become a defining voice of American radio, creating and hosting 'American Top 40,' the countdown show that for decades told the United States which songs were number one.
His warm, instantly recognizable delivery and his signing-off line — 'Keep your feet on the ground, and keep reaching for the stars' — made him a household name. Generations also knew him as the voice of Shaggy in the 'Scooby-Doo' cartoons and as the narrator of countless broadcasts.
Beyond entertainment, Kasem was a prominent advocate for Arab American causes and worked to counter stereotypes of Arabs in media. He was open about his heritage and used his platform to encourage understanding.
His career stands as a reminder that the Druse story is also a diaspora story — of families who carried their identity across oceans and rose to the top of their fields far from the mountains of the Levant.
